Last year I woke up from a dream where I owned my own Mexican Ice cream shop and I realized that this could actually be a reality. I had spent the past year traveling throughout Mexico researching my first cookbook, “My Sweet Mexico” (Ten Speed Press) and knew I wanted to continue sharing the wonderful sweets from my homeland.
I also realized this idea was “meant to be” because it was a visit to a hidden Ice cream town that inspired “My Sweet Mexico” in the first place! (you can read the story it in the introduction to the frozen treats chapter) .
With the idea planted and set, I knew I wanted to start with paletas (ice pops) — Mexico’s quintessential frozen treat and always a part of Mexican ice cream shops.
I decided to take the idea to the streets first because it’s a way to connect with people which was very important to me (the store is the next phase) So, La Newyorkina was born in the summer of 2010 at the Hester street fair, selling paletas with flavors like mango-chile, avocado, hibiscus, tamarind, and corn as well as some others using the best fruit summer has to offer. I was very happy when I realized people were as excited as I was about the paletas and the awesome flavors of Mexico.
Later that summer, we expanded into aguas frescas (fresh fruit coolers) at the New Amsterdam market. Once the weather was cooler, we started making other Mexican treats such as pan de muerto, sweet tamales, hot chocolate and Mexican fruit punch.
“La Newyorkina” means the girl from New York, inspired by the name “La Michoacana” (the girl from Michoacán), the most popular name in paleterias (paleta shops) around Mexico.
It also represents who I am—Mexican born and raised, but a New Yorker at heart (I’ve been here 11 years and counting).
Our products are truly artisan, and made in small batches. We utilize local, seasonal ingredients whenever possible, and support Mexican craftsmen that produce many of the base ingredients we use as well.
I hope to continue sharing the sweeter side of Mexico for years to come.
