La Newyorkina is all about sharing the sweetness of Mexico. The frozen treats & other sweets I grew up which are part of the essence of who I am. I am very excited to share them with you but now, you can enjoy them without having to travel too far!
Help rebuild La Newyorkina
Hurricane Sandy knocked us down!
Last November, our kitchen in Red Hook was devastated by Hurricane Sandy. Like many of our friends and neighbors, I was caught unprepared for the devastation, emotionally and physically, that the storm caused. All machinery, inventory, kitchen supplies and equipment was destroyed.
I am rebuilding my kitchen for the summer but could use your help.

How it all started
After spending a year traveling through Mexico doing research for my first cookbook: My Sweet Mexico, I returned to New York and wanted to continue sharing the sweet flavors of Mexico that I was incredibly fortunate to grow up with.
I had always dreamed of having my own little shop but the truth is I was torn on what I wanted to do; a bakery, a candy store, a breakfast place¦ what to do? The decision was hard because I wanted to do it all!
One morning, I woke up and decided it would be an ice cream shop so with the help of my dear friend Hannah (who helped me for the summer) I began my journey making paletas and selling them at the Hester street fair which also opened the summer 2010.
I wanted to start with these delicious Mexican Ice pops because they represent the frozen treat in Mexico. Every little town has at least one paletería (paleta shops) and to us Mexicans, paletas are like gelatos to Italians, a delicious and integral part of our culture.
Getting started wasn´t as easy as I thought and getting basic things like the molds proved to be quite a challenge but all the hard work has been worth it.
Although my dream was and still is to have my own little shop, I wanted to take the idea to the streets first and you know what? it has been an incredible experience because not only was I able to prove that people were as excited as I was about the flavors of Mexico and able to get immediate feedback - the best thing has been the connection with the people and wouldn´t trade that for anything.
La Newyorkina has expanded from one cart to several ones and our paletas are also found in many more places. With the incredible help of a hard working and amazing team, I have been fortunate enough to keep on creating and be able to share these treats I so much love with many more people.
